Clothing Ourselves with Christ

What are you wearing (Jake, from State Farm)? ;)

No really, when you got up today and got dressed, you likely thought about what you’d put on. Would you stay in your PJ’s? Grab the comfy sweats? Should you make sure to wear a nice shirt because it would show on the video conference call? Did you think about it at all or just pick up what was easy and close at hand?

Choosing our clothing is usually pretty simple but choosing our frame of mind can be much more difficult and, especially in this strange and difficult time, we have to choose well. In these verses from Colossians, Paul is writing from prison to encourage the church at Colossae to choose well how they will ‘dress for success.’

Colossians 3:14-17 The Message (MSG)
So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.

As you prepare to face each new day, take Paul’s encouragement to heart. Before anything else, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you.
