How to Pray Throughout Your Day

Ephesians 6:18 (NCV) “Pray in the Spirit at all times with all kinds of prayers, asking for everything you need. To do this you must always be ready and never give up. And always pray for all God’s people.”

1. I get up with gratitude. (Thanksgiving)

Matthew 6:8-9 (NIV) Jesus said, “…Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven…’”

James 1:17 (KJV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…

2. I bless God’s name at breakfast. (Praise)

Matthew 6:9 (NIV) ‘…hallowed be your name…’

Psalm 145:2 (ESV) Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.

GOD SAYS “I AM . . .”

  • Abba – Your Loving Father
  • El Deah – Your God Who Knows Everything
  • Jehovah Rapha – Your God Who Heals You
  • El Shaddai – Your God Almighty
  • Jehovah Jireh – Your God Who Will Provide
  • Yahweh Shalom – Your God of Peace

3. I remember midmorning, what matters most. (Dedication)

Matthew 6:10 (NIV) ‘…your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…’

Matthew 6:33 (NIV) But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

4. I list my needs at lunch. (Petition)

Matthew 6:11(NIV) ‘Give us today our daily bread…’

I ask for anything I need.

John 14:13 (NLT) Jesus: “You can ask for anything in my name…”

I ask for what other people need, too.

5. I ask for forgiveness in the afternoon. (Confession)

Matthew 6:12 (NIV) ‘Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.’

Psalm 32:5 (NLT) I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt…And you forgave me!

6. I ask God to help me make wise decisions. (Protection)

Matthew 6:13 (NIV) ‘And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.’

7. I end my day with an encouraging truth. (Benediction)

Matthew 6:13 (NASB) ‘For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever! Amen!’”

‘Talk It Over’ Questions

If you’re in a small group using the 40 Days to a Powerful Prayer Life guide, please refer to the questions found on page 97.

  • From the daily schedule based on the Lord’s Prayer, which ones struck you the most and how are you going to try and incorporate them into your daily prayer life?

  • Read James 1:17. We should get up each morning with a prayer of gratitude. Share one thing you could thank God for every morning.

  • Matthew 6:33 says, “If you seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness, all the other things will be given to you as well.” If you have experienced a good opportunity that opened up in front of you, when you sought first God’s kingdom and righteousness, share it with your group.

  • “…for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Matthew 6:8 says Jesus told us that our Father knows what we need before we ask him. Since this is true, why do you think God wants us to pray often and about everything?

  • Our prayers should include asking for forgiveness from God. That forgiveness helps us let go of any guilt, resentment or shame – something God doesn’t want us to hold on to. Can you describe a time when you carried guilt or resentment from day to day?

  • Throughout scripture there are many names for God. You will notice on your outline we covered a few. Share a name of God that you have personally used in prayer.

  • Parents – Check out the information on our kid’s page at northpointe.org/kids where you’ll find info on Sunday services and family resources to help you as you navigate this current season.
