The Joy of Jesus

Luke 2:10 (DARBY) And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I announce to you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people.

1. Joy is the essence of the Gospel.

2. Joy is the mark of a believer.

Matthew 13:44 (NIV) “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

Romans 14:17 (NIV) For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

As you know him, you become like him.

Proverbs 8:3031 (NIV) Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.

Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT) “For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

As you know him, you fall in love with him.

1 Peter 1:89 (NIV) Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

3. Joy overwhelms our pain.

John 16:2022 (NLT) “I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me… You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy. It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world. So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.”

Isaiah 53:3 (NLT) He was…a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief…

Ezekiel 36:26 (NIV) I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

2 Corinthians 4:1617 (NIV) …Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

4. Joy peaks through our obedience.

Psalm 16:11 (NCV) You will teach me how to live a holy life. Being with you will fill me with joy; at your right hand I will find pleasure forever. A prayer of David.

5. Joy is permanent and deep.

Hebrews 12:2 (NIV) …Jesus…For the joy set before him… endured the cross…

Isaiah 53:11 (NIV) After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

6. Joy is conditional.

Read John 16:1622. What event is Jesus referring to in verses 2022? In what ways does the world’s joy (v. 20) contrast with the joy the disciples will experience (v. 22)?

Read Zephaniah 3:17 under Point 2. Joy will displace mourning and calm will follow the storms of God’s refining fire. How does that square with your experience of God?

What does the parable in Matthew 13:44 teach about the value of the kingdom? With what emotion and energy should it be pursued?

Look over all 5 points. Which one stood out to you the most? Which one is encouraging to you? Which one do you struggle with, if any?

Read Ezekiel 36:26. What shape is your heart in right now: (a) Like a piece of granite? (b) Being broken up by some hard blows? (c) Being softened by the steady rain of the Spirit? (d) Other? Why do you describe yourself like this?

Consider Point 5, “Joy is conditional.” All we are required to do is believe in the Son, serve, and honor Jesus loyally and faithfully. Share your thoughts with your small group. Praise God for his kindness in such an easy, joyful task.
