Pastor Shane Ham : A Priest For Our Pain

All Yule Need · 33:36 · Recorded December 18, 2022

A Priest For Our Pain

Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIV) We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Isaiah 9:6 (KJ21) For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

What makes a good priest?

• A priest must be like us and yet unlike us.

Hannah & the birth of Samuel – 1 Samuel 1:1-28

How is Jesus the ultimate Counselor?

• He has none of the sin that eats up “sympathy”.

• He’s had all of the experiences that create “sympathy”.

• He loves you more than you love yourself!

Jesus heals the Deaf Mute – Mark 7:31-37

The woman with the issue of blood – Mark 5:25-35

Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead – John 11:38-44

How can I engage like Jesus?

1. Engage personally.

Think on it:

The baby born in the manger is not one more legend pointing to the truth. The baby born in the manager is the truth to which all legends point.

2. Engage emotionally.

Look at what Jesus did.

Look at how emotionally he got involved with people.

Look at how involved he is with you.

3. Engage spiritually.

Romans 8:34 (NIV84) Christ Jesus, who died…is at the right hand of God is also interceding for us.

The Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7

Talk It Over

Review Hebrews 4:15-16 and think about what makes Jesus a good priest. When has it been helpful to you that Jesus has experienced the core of what you’ve experienced? In what ways has it been beneficial to know that he is not like you and how valuable has that been in your life?

In your quiet time this week read each of the five scriptures Shane referenced in the message. Look for the priest, prophet, and king in each story. Spend time in prayer each day praising God for being all things to you as only he can be.

Shane gave us three ways to engage with people. Which is the easiest for you? The most difficult? Scary? What changes will you make to enter into deeper relationship with people by engaging with them in these three ways?

What area of your life is in pain today? Have you trusted your High Priest with it? Will you turn it over to him today? Pray a prayer of surrender and give it to Jesus so you will receive his mercy & grace.

Parents: In this last week leading up to Christmas, spend time with your children reading the Christmas story from Luke 2. Talk about each of the people or groups in the story and what they saw, felt, or thought. Help your children make the connection between this baby in the manger we celebrate at Christmas and the Savior who gave his life for us so that we can be with him forever. Remind them that he is the best gift we’ll ever receive!
