Not In Control

2 Samuel 11 – David & Bathsheba

Control Issues:

Abuse of power (v.4)

Manipulation (v.6)

Desperation (v.13)

No other option (v.14)

When you get stuck, you get stupid.

Sovereignty simply defined: God is in control.

That means: I am not in control! Never was, never will be!

Consider just a few claims:

Revelation 21:6a (NLT) And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End.

Colossians 1:16 (NLT) …for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth…Everything was created through him and for him.

Romans 11:33 (NLT) Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!

Jeremiah 32:17 (NLT) O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!

Psalm 103:19 (NLT) The Lord has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything.

The devil likes to twist the truth!

John 8:31-32 (NLT) Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

How does God’s sovereignty impact my everyday life?

1. God’s sovereignty calls for submission.

Romans 8:28 (NLT) And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

2. God’s sovereignty provides comfort.

3. God’s sovereignty inspires worship.

Psalm 24:1 (NLT) The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.

  • Rescued – Psalm 18:16-17 (NLT) He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me.

  • Provided – Psalm 23:1 (NLT) The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.

  • Led – Psalm 32:8 (NLT) The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”

Simply because he is worthy!

Psalm 145:3 (NLT) Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.

What I can always be confident of/count on him for:

His presence is always supreme over everything;

His power is always greater than any challenge;

His promise is always superior to any other idea;

His purpose is always grander than any interruptions or circumstances.

##### ‘Talk It Over’ Questions
Read the verses below as you contemplate these questions:

– How are you able to rest in God’s sovereignty in times of fear or crisis?
– How does willingly submitting control of your life to God give you peace?
– How would you respond to someone who says that turning over control to someone else is a cop out and just means you don’t have to take responsibility for your life?
– Imagine for a moment what more we might see in David’s life if he hadn’t tried to control and manipulate the situation with Bathsheba. What other blessings would he have received? What greater good could he have accomplished? Can you see a way your past submission to God would have changed your future?

**Deuteronomy 3:24 (NLT)** ‘O Sovereign Lord, you have only begun to show your greatness and the strength of your hand to me, your servant. Is there any god in heaven or on earth who can perform such great and mighty deeds as you do?’

**2 Samuel 7:22 (NLT)** “How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!”

**Psalm 68:20 (NLT)** Our God is a God who saves! The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death.

**Psalm 73:28 (NLT)** But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.
