Fighting for Friendships

Hebrews 10:26 (NLT2) Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning…

2 Peter 3:1 (NIV) Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you

1 John 4:7 (NIV) Dear friends, let us love one another…

John 15:15 (NIV) I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Ecclesiastes 4:78 (NIV) Again I saw something meaningless under the sun: There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless a miserable business!

Why is it worth fighting for?

1. We were made for it.

Genesis 1:27 (NIV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:26 **(NIV) Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…”

John 17:20-21 (NIV) “I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”

2. Friendship came before the beginning.

Genesis 1:31 (NIV) God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Genesis 2:18 (NIV) The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.”

3. Friendship will never come to an end.

4. It must be fought for, or it’ll never work!

Ephesians 4:36 (NIV) Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to one hope when you were called one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

How do I wage a good fight?

Draw close to God.

James 4:8 (NIV) Come near to God and he will come near to you.

Discover others who are also drawing close to God.

  • What comes to mind when you think about the message title “Fighting for Friendships”?

  • In what specific ways can you spur another Christian on toward true friendship? How have you been spurred on by your friends? Whose exhortation, example or encouragement means the most to you?

  • Read John 15:15. Do you feel like Jesus’ servant or his friend? What helps develop the friendship?

  • According to 1 John 4:7, we are to “love one another.” Is the love discussed here an action or a feeling? What does this tell you about love?

  • How are you making every effort to “keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace?” (See Ephesians 4:36)

For further study and/or discussion:

Read Proverbs 18. What does this chapter say about finding and keeping your brothers, friends, even your life mate?

Read John 15:13. Specifically, how would you rate yourself on laying down your life for your friends?
