Boundaries For Your Work

Ecclesiastes 3:22; 5:19 (NLT) There is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is why we are here!…To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God.

Becoming clear about my zones of responsibility & freedom in living.

“A lack of healthy boundaries will manifest itself clinically, relationally, & professionally.” Dr. Henry Cloud

1. Keep on learning & growing in your skill set.

Ecclesiastes 10:10 (NIV) If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed but skill will bring success.

Make routines become routes, not ruts!

Proverbs 22:29 (MSG) Observe people who are good at their work— skilled workers are always in demand and admired; they don’t take a back seat to anyone.

2.Work at having healthy 360 relationships.

That aren’t inconsiderate, inappropriate, or inadvisable.

Galatians 6:2-5 (CEB) Carry each other’s burdens and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are important when they aren’t, they’re fooling themselves. Each person should test their own work and be happy with doing a good job and not compare themselves with others. Each person will have to carry their own load.

3. Honor your limits with margins that guard them.

Proverbs 23:4 (NLT) Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit.

Attending to productivity, creativity, & longevity.

Psalm 127:2 (TEV) It is useless to work so hard for a living, getting up early and going to bed late. For the LORD provides for those he loves, while they are asleep.

Cooperating with cycles, seasons, & rhythms.

Exodus 23:12 (NKJV) “Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed.”

Mark 2:27 (NLT) Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.”

Divert daily, withdraw weekly, & abandon annually.

4. Work with drive but not drivenness.

Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG) “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

What am I doing, and why do I do it?

Lamentations 3:40 (GW) “Let us look closely at our ways and examine them and then return to the LORD.”

  • When have you become aware of the need for a boundary to be drawn in your workplace or career? What difference did it make for you?

  • Read Proverbs 22:3. After hearing this message what are some precautions you feel prompted to put in place to keep you out of danger in your work?

  • What was a new idea or tip you picked up from this message that’s going to help you?

  • Have you experienced times when you were in the “burnout zone” in your work – What was that like for you? How did you get out of it and what did it teach you?

  • Emerson said, “Live from a great depth of being.” Read Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28-30. How does knowing Jesus and walking with him help you to do that? Can you give an example of that?

  • Where did God seem to speak directly to you in this message about an area of living Steve mentioned? What do you think you need to do about it and how can your group pray for or support you?

  • Elementary parents, we are continuing to teach about cooperation in NP Kids. Ask kids who saw a big need in our story today. (Nehemiah) Who worked together to solve the problem? (Everyone in the city) God wants us to cooperate with each other to do what needs to be done! Our bottom-line today is: When we work together, we can make it better. Talk about this as a family.
