Hitting the Target

Philippians 3:13-14 (NAS)  “I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

1. Have a target that’s worth hitting!

Living out God’s purposes & plans for us.

Colossians 1:16 (MSG) For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible…everything got started in him and finds its purpose in him.

Psalm 119:32-35 (NIV) “I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free…Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end…Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight.”

Laying out SMART goals for ourselves.

2. Adapt to new skills, habits & attitudes needed.

Ephesians 4:22-24 (CEV)  You must give up your old way of life with all its bad habits.  Let the Spirit change your way of thinking and make you into a new person. You were created to be like God, and so you must please him and be truly holy.

3. Put time on your side with perseverance.

Hebrews 10:35-36 (NLT) So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

Ignoring distractions

Battling deceleration

2 Corinthians 8:11 (TEV) On with it, then, and finish the job! Be as eager to finish it as you were to plan it, and do it with what you now have.

Defusing discouragement

Proverbs 24:16 (ESV) The righteous falls seven times and rises again.

2 Thessalonians 3:5 (MSG)  May the Master take you by the hand and lead you along the path of God’s love and Christ’s endurance.

Resisting diversion

Galatians 5:7-8 (NIV)  You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV) Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…

Study & Discussion Questions
  • When did you most recently reach a goal or hit a target you’d set for yourself? How did it make you feel and what did it require of you?
  • What was the most valuable thing from this message for you? What big “aha” idea do you want to give more thought, planning & effort to?
  • Review the SMART goal acronym to be sure everyone in your group gets it. Why are these points valuable in helping us set meaningful goals?
  • Pastor Steve laid out “Four D’s” related to the 3rd point of the message on perseverance. Which of these do you find you’ve been especially prone to? How is God helping you with this? Is there a verse of scripture from this message or that comes to mind that can be especially motivating to you in dealing with this? Which have you found you’re doing better on than you used to?
  • Read 2 Corinthians 5:17 and Ephesians 4:22-24. Where has God really helped you to lay aside the “old man” and put on “new self” as you look back on your spiritual journey? Is there a struggle right now your group could pray for and encourage or hold you accountable for?
  • This week work with your kids on the power of goals & persevering toward them. Maybe they’ve already set some goals – find out how they’re feeling about their progress. If setting goals is a new habit you’re trying to teach – identify with them an area they desire to improve and work with them on the SMART approach. Be sure to celebrate accomplishments and mile markers with them with rewards & “pay-offs!” You’re helping them learn to enjoy the satisfaction of improving, despite their failures or crashes.
