Running Your Race

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV) Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…

1. Offer yourself in humble worship.

Romans 6:13 (TLB) Give yourselves completely to God—every part of you… you want to be tools in the hands of God, to be used for his good purposes.

Romans 11:36 (HCSB) For from him and through him and to him are all things.

Living this day in light of that day!

2. Develop yourself with steady discipleship.

Ephesians 1:11-12 (MSG)  It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

3. Connect yourself for real fellowship.

Romans 12:4-6 (MSG)  We are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we’re talking about is Christ’s body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body.

Ephesians 4:16 (NLT)  He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

4. Express yourself through on-target ministry.

Ephesians 2:10 (ICB)  God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us new people so that we would do good works. God had planned in advance those good works for us. He had planned for us to live our lives doing them.

Galatians 6:4-5 (MSG)  Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

5. Thread yourself into evangelism’s story.

Colossians 1:6 (NLT)  This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and under-stood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.

Psalm 67:2 (TLB)  “Send us around the world with the news of your saving power and your eternal plan for all mankind.”

Make your next move in faith!

Study & Discussion Questions
    • What is the most memorable “part” you’ve had the chance to play in your life? (A play, in a band, on a team, in the military, at work, in the Church, etc.)
    • When you look at the 5 eternal purposes God has for our lives and the action steps Steve mentioned connected to them, how balanced are the “big 5” in your life? Would you say you’re crawling, walking, or running in them?
    • What do you think holds you back from fulfilling each of the five action statements related to the purposes referenced above?
    • As you’re on the journey of discipleship with Jesus, what things have become clearer about how you have been “SHAPEd” by God?
    • If you’re comfortable with it and know your group members well enough, take time to let the group comment on qualities they see in each member and how they reveal Christlikeness in their SHAPE.
    • What do you feel your main ‘take away’ from this message or series is, and how can your group pray for and assist you with this?
    • Make it your aim this week to affirm the uniqueness of your child(ren). You want to help them come to appreciate that they are uniquely planned and fashioned by God for his purposes. This is best done by calling attention to specific ways they are distinctive in their character or ways, rather than their physical traits. If possible, allow each family member to highlight what they appreciate about each member of the family. This goes deep into the heart of children to start seeing themselves and their distinctiveness as a design of God. Perhaps memorize the following verse together Ephesians 2:10a “God has made us what we are.”
