The Creed · 37:15 · Recorded July 12, 2021

The Resurrection Changes Everything

Matthew 28:6 (NLT) He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen.

1 Corinthians 15:12-20 (NLT) 12But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. 14And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 17And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. 20But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.

Because of the resurrection…

1. We are forgiven for our sins.

Romans 4:25 (Phi) He was handed over [to death] on account of our transgressions, and he was raised on account of our justification.

2. Our faith is well-founded.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV) The life I live I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

3. The apostles preach what is true.

John 14:6 (NIV) I am the way, the truth, and the life.

4. Those who have fallen asleep are alive.

John 11:25-26 (NASB) Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,  and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

The greatest news in all the world

In raising him from the dead…

– He gave us forgiveness and glorified Jesus as the all-sufficient forgiver.

– He gave us a friend to count on and glorified Jesus as completely reliable.

– He gave us guidance and unchanging truth and glorified Jesus as the absolute foundation for truth and righteousness.

– He gave us everlasting joy that will not be ended by death, and glorified Jesus as the author of life, the victor over death.

Talk It Over
  • Read Matthew 28:6. Reflect on the first time you knew in your heart that Jesus died and rose again. How did that make you feel? If you are still unsure of this truth, what is holding you back?

  • How does “justification” change things in our relationship with God? What happened to the wrath of God that Paul talked about in Romans 4:9 and Romans 1:18?

  • What does it mean that “those who have fallen asleep are alive”? How has Christ reenergized your life?

  • Paul puts the resurrection in perspective with the second coming and the end of time. How does it make you feel that in the end Christ will be victorious?

  • Reread John 11:25-26. What does it mean to you that you have eternal life through your faith in Christ?

  • God made Jesus the all-sufficient forgiver. Are you still holding onto guilt over your past? If you have confessed your sins, he has forgiven you. What is holding you back from forgiving yourself?

  • Parents, talk to your children about what the resurrection means to all those that believe in Jesus Christ. How can we express our gratitude to God for sending his son? How do our actions and words represent this truth?
