Unlocking Truth From Philadelphia

Revelations 3:7-13 (NIV84) 7“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test those who live the earth. 11I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. 12Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. 13He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

1. What do we see in Philadelphia?

A Church that has

• Little STRENGTH

• Little SIZE

• Little INFLUENCE

• Under attack by RELIGIOUS PEOPLE

2. What does God see in Philadelphia?

A Church that is:

• RESILENT

• FAITHFUL

• LOYAL

3. The answer is Jesus!

• JESUS is Holy and True.

John 14:6 (NIV84) Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

• JESUS holds the key.

Isaiah 22:22 (NIV84) I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.

• JESUS controls the door.

1 Corinthians 16:9 (NIV84) …because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.

• JESUS makes the pillar.

1 Timothy 3:15 (NIV84) “…if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. for me to die than to live.”

4. What does God want?

• HOLD ON – Endure patiently

• STAND UP – Come home – the door is open

• LISTEN – The Spirit is speaking

Talk It Over

We see the church in Philadelphia being resilient, faithful, and true. Who are some people in your life that have been examples to you of these qualities?

Have you experienced a time where you felt like you were not important or weaker than everyone around you? Describe how that felt and if God has ever met you in a meaningful way during that time.

What could your life look like if it was fully centered on Jesus and his holiness and power?

Describe a time in your life when you had to endure patiently. What distracted you from enduring or what encouraged you to hold strong?

How has religion blocked your intimacy with God? Describe your reaction to the religious being called followers of the synagogue of Satan. Is there a place in your life where God is asking you to stand up and come home to him?

What allows you to hear more clearly from the Holy Spirit? How has the Holy Spirit directed you most recently?

Parents: This week take a moment and talk with your kids about how hard it can be to wait for things. No one likes to wait, and even waiting on God can be hard! Together, brainstorm some ways you can be patient while waiting? Is it saying a prayer, taking a deep breath, slowly counting to ten? Pray together as a family. Pray for God to give you all patience this week when waiting!
