Pastor Kevin Manning : Father’s Day 2021

Father's Day 2021 · 38:32 · Recorded June 20, 2021

Father’s Day at NorthPointe

Romans 6:13 (TLB) Give yourselves completely to God — every part of you — for you have been brought back to life, and you want to be tools in the hands of God, used for his good purposes.

Romans 12:1 (NCV) Since God has shown us great mercy, offer your lives as a living sacrifice to him. Your offering must be only for God and pleasing to him, which is the spiritual way for you to worship.

I must. . .

Worship with others.

Psalm 100:2 (NLT) Worship the Lord with gladness! Come before him, singing with joy!

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV) Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.

Get connected with others.

Romans 12:4-5 (MSG) We are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from Christ’s Body as a whole, not the other way around. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we?

Ephesians 2:16 (MSG) Christ brought us together through his death on the Cross. The Cross got us to embrace, and that was the end of the hostility.

Learn from others.

Ephesians 4:16 (NLT) Christ’s Body is fitted TOGETHER perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow…

Serve with others.

1 Peter 4:10 (NCV) Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good servants of God’s various gifts of grace.

Mark 8:35 (NLT) If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. But if you give your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will find true life.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NCV) 9Two people are always better than one, because they get more done by working together. 10If one falls down, the other can help him up. But it is bad for the person who is alone and falls, because no one is there to help.11If two lie down together, they can share the same blanket and stay warm, but a person alone will not be warm. 12An enemy might defeat one person, but two people together can defend themselves. And a rope that is woven of three braids is hard to break.

When we work together…

We maximize our impact (vs 9)

We minimize our failures (vs 10)

We mobilize our resources (vs 11)

Join with others on mission.

Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to do everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you…

2 Corinthians 8:3, 5 (MSG) They gave beyond their ability…far more than they could afford. What explains it was that they had first given themselves unreservedly to God. The other giving simply flowed out of the purposes of God working in their lives.

Talk It Over
  • Take a look back at the two opening verses from Romans. What does it mean to you to “give yourself completely” and to “offer your lives as a living sacrifice”? Talk about this in your small group or journal your thoughts. What do you see in your life that is holding you back from “completely” giving yourself to Jesus? Pray about this!

  • In light of today’s message, what is one step you’ll take this week to be more connected to people in your church family? If you’re unsure, you might check out northpointe.org/now or northpointe.org/events to see what’s happening that you can take part in for growth and connection.

  • Of the five actions that Kevin and Josh laid out, which is easiest for you? Most difficult? Uncomfortable? Why? Is there something that you need God’s help to overcome? Share that with a friend so you can pray about it together.

  • Reread Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. How easy is it for you to allow someone to help you? Or, to let someone know that you need help? Where would you be today spiritually were it not for the help of others? Ask God to help you in this area. He made us to be in community and to rely on one another – we really are better together!

  • Which of the verses shared today have an impact for you or spoke most meaningfully to you?

  • Parents, as your kids are heading to friends houses, summer camps and events, or to go hang out with anyone else, talk to them about why having other people in our lives is important. Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 with them and share why friends, especially believing friends are helpful in our lives – for encouragement, accountability, support, and more!
