Pastor Shane Ham : Creating the Right Environment

Getting Out of Your Own Way · 46:11 · Recorded March 3, 2019

2 Peter 3:17-18 (NCV) Dear friends, since you already know about this, be careful. Do not let those evil people lead you away by the wrong they do. Be careful so you will not fall from your strong faith. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Glory be to him now and forever! Amen.

2 Peter 1:3-4 (NIV) His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. He has given us this very great and precious promise, so that now you may participate in the divine nature.

1 Peter 1:23 (NIV) For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

1. The company you keep.

1 Corinthians 15:33 (NLT2) Don’t be fooled…“bad company corrupts good character.”

Proverbs 27:12 (TEV) Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but a stupid person will walk right into it and regret it later.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NIV) Two are better than one…If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!

– I need models that inspire me.

1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV) Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.

– I need mentors that instruct me.

– I need friends that encourage and sharpen me.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV) Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Hebrews 10:25 (TEV) Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.

2. The habits you cultivate.

Am I in God’s Word?

1 Peter 2:2 (NIV) Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.

Am I giving time for worship and reflection?

2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV) But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Am I walking with God?

3. The attitudes you choose.

Be careful about:

– Defeatist attitude

– Apathetic attitude

– Blaming attitude

– Condemned attitude

1 John 4:8 (NIV) God is love.

Colossians 1:15 (Phi) Now Christ is the visible expression of the invisible God.

Hebrews 12:2 (NIV) Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jeremiah 31:3 (NLT2) Long ago the Lord said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.”

  • What part of today’s message did you find the most helpful? Why?

  • Share with your small group a time in your life when you were flourishing or really growing. What was it about those circumstances that made it possible for you to grow the way you did? How can you get back to that today?

  • Regarding the three environmental areas Pastor Shane mentioned in today’s message, which one do you find the most challenging? What steps do you intend to take to begin to change it? Is there something your small group can do to help?

  • Psalm 119:11, 16 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you…I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” Without having the Word in our heart, what defense do we have against sin? God wants to speak to us every day. What needs to change in your life if you’re going to give yourself the time to hear from him?

  • Regarding the several attitudes Pastor Shane cautioned about, which one of those do you struggle with the most? Is there another not mentioned here you find it difficult to respond to?

  • Elementary parents, this month we are learning to treasure what matters most – our relationship with God and with others. God cares about what we do with our stuff and our money because he doesn’t want it to become more important than our relationships. Be sure to grab a monthly handout in your child’s class to learn more about what kids will be learning all month long.
