Pastor Steve Williams : Perfecting Ourselves Without Being Perfectionists

Getting Out of Your Own Way · 38:50 · Recorded February 24, 2019

Matthew 5:48 (AMP) “You, therefore, must be perfect [growing into complete maturity of godliness in mind and character, having reached the proper height of virtue and integrity], as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Ephesians 5:1, 8-10 (NAS) Be imitators of God, as beloved children…for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

Your heavenly Father is perfect, but he’s NOT a perfectionist.

The downside risks of perfectionism

It’s hard to not feel defeated by failures.

It’s hard to ever experience satisfaction.

It’s really hard on those who live with us!

It’s easy to miss the bigger picture.

Matthew 23:23-24 (NLT) “You are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things. Blind guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!”

It’s easy to procrastinate on simple tasks.

Ecclesiastes 11:4 (TLB) If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.

It’s really easy to distort Christian faith.

Finding relief from perfectionism

1. Abandon the quest to prove yourself!

Ecclesiastes 7:20 (TEV)  There is no one on earth who does what is right all the time and never makes a mistake.

Romans 5:8 (BBE) But God has made clear his love to us, in that, when we were still sinners, Christ gave his life for us.

2. Experience the Father’s heart for you.

Colossians 2:13-14 (ICB) God forgave all our sins. We owed a debt because we broke God’s laws. That debt listed all the rules we failed to follow. But God forgave us that debt. He took away that debt and nailed it to the cross.

Ephesians 1:4-5 (TLB) Long ago, even before he made the world, God chose us to be his very own through what Christ would do for us; he decided then to make us holy in his eyes, without a single fault—we who stand before him covered with his love. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by sending Jesus Christ to die for us. And he did this because he wanted to!

Hebrews 10:14 (NIV) Because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

3. Exchange your faulty misbeliefs with reality thinking.

4. Enjoy the security & significance only grace can give.

Romans 5:20 (Phi) Though sin is shown to be wide and deep, thank God his grace is wider and deeper still!

Romans 5:1-2 (TLB) Since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith in his promises, we can have real peace with him because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. For because of our faith, he has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to actually becoming all that God has had in mind for us to be.

5. Pursue perfecting life in him free of perfectionism!

Philippians 3:12 (NIV) “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
