Breaks You From

Galatians 1:3-4 (NIV)  3Grace and peace to you from God our father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.

Titus 3:3-6 (NLT2)  3Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. 4But—“When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. 6He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.

Gospel Changing Power:

– The gospel enlightens your perspective.

Ephesians 1:18 (NIV)  I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints…

– The gospel remasters your allegiances.

John 12:3-8 (NLT2) 3Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance. 4But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5“That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. 7Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

Mark 14:3-5 (NIV)  3While he was in Bethany… a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 4Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor. ” And they rebuked her harshly.

Luke 7:38 (NIV) As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

It means:

  • You will not be conditioned by the cost.
  • You will not be conditioned by your past.
  • You will not be conditioned by control.
  • You will not be conditioned by culture.

– The gospel awakens your love toward God!

Getting Started:

– Start spending time at the feet of Jesus.

Galatians 5:22-25 (NIV)  22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

God works:

  • Naturally
  • Gradually
  • Powerfully
  • Inevitably

To become more and more like Him.

Talk It Over
  • Given the value of the perfume, how would you have reacted as you watched Mary? How does Jesus interpret Mary’s action? How is his comment in verse 8 especially applicable to Judas?
  • If you had a year’s salary or time to use for Christ, how would you use it? Could you easily part with your time or money? Discuss this with a close friend.
  • Are you spending enough time with Jesus? If not, what is keeping you from growing in your relationship with him?
  • Do you notice a change in your perspective when you spend more time with him? Reflect on how the Lord has changed your perspective since giving you heart over to him.
  • What area of disobedience or personal struggle are you having in your life right now that you can share? How do you think spending daily time with God will help you with this issue?
  • How much of God’s energy are you using at the moment? God put into your bank account all of his resources. What is keeping you from transferring them into your checking account?
  • What is the most loving thing that you have ever done for Jesus? For someone else? How was Jesus a part of it?
  • Parents, this would be a great week to talk with your kids about how important it is to spend time with Jesus. Have them think about how they feel when they spend special time with their friends. Why does this make them feel special? Remind them that Jesus feels that same way when we spend time with him.
