Builds You Up

Galatians 2:14 (NJB) “When I saw, though, that their behaviour was not true to the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of all of them, ‘Since you, though you are a Jew, live like the gentiles and not like the Jews, how can you compel the gentiles to live like the Jews?’”

Metaphors to remember:

The gospel is a seed.

1 Peter 1:23, 25 (NASB) …for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God… That word is the good news that was announced to you.

Colossians 1:6 (NIV) All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.

The gospel is a power.

Romans 1:16 (NIV) I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

Its’ working “power”:

It creates a unique self-image.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV) I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

It creates unique relationships.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (NLT2) The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

It creates unique goals & ambitions.

Ephesians 3:20 (AMP) Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us,…

Talk It Over
  • How quickly would you stand up and rebuke the leader of the church? What does this incident tell you about need for accountability between believers?
  • Applying the spiritual concept of Galatians 2:20, who is “alive” in you right now – “I” or “Christ”?
  • According to Galatians 2:21, if you can be in right standing with God through your own efforts – for example, by being a “good person” – what did Christ die for?
  • The gospel is described as both “a seed” and “a power”. How have you noticed its working power manifest in changing the way you live your life? What have been some of the changes you’ve noticed since believing? What changes are you still looking for? How has it made a difference in the three areas Kevin talked about (self-image, relationships, ambitions)? How can your small group be praying for you about the things you’ve thought of?
  • Is there an area you are needing prayer for? Would you be willing to share that with our prayer team?
  • Parents – Ask your kids, “What’s the best news you’ve ever heard?” Enjoy their answers about vacations, desserts, and extra TV or game time and then have a conversation about how the gospel is the good news, the best news ever because it isn’t just a 1-week vacation or 30 minutes of a favorite show – it’s forever! The “good news” is that Jesus is our friend forever!
