The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit has been given to all Christians, become more and more like Jesus Christ. It is through the Holy Spirit that we trade the worst parts of us for the best that God has for us.

The Holy Spirit as The Exchanger

Titus 3:3-6 (KNT) We ourselves, you see, used at one time to be foolish, disobedient, deceived, and enslaved to various kinds of passions and pleasures. We spent our time in wickedness and jealousy. We were despicable in ourselves, and we hated each other. But when the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, he saved us…through the washing of the new birth and the renewal of the holy spirit, which was poured out richly upon us through Jesus, our king and savior.

His job:

He raises your perspective.

A lesser vision for something grander.

Ephesians 1:17-18; 3:16 (KNT) I pray that the God of King Jesus our Lord, the father of glory, would give you, in your spirit, the gift of being wise, of seeing things people can’t normally see, because you are coming to know him and to have the eyes of your inmost self opened to God’s light. Then you will know exactly what the hope is that goes with God’s call; you will know the wealth of the glory of his inheritance in his holy people…My prayer is this: that he will lay out all the riches of his glory to give you strength and power, through his spirit, in your inner being.

He renovates your instincts.

A “heart of stone” with a “heart of flesh”.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NIV) I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

He refines your temperament.

From self-reliant to spirit-empowered.

Galatians 5:22-25 (NIV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

“Fruit” is natural, gradual, and inevitable.

He reprioritizes your passions.

From self-indulgent to kingdom-driven.

Matthew 13:44 (NIV) The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

He replenishes your power supply.

From weakness to strength.

Acts 1:8 (NCV) But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power.

Ephesians 3:16 (NIV) I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.

My job:

1. The practice of abiding.

John 15:1-16 (NIV) 1I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me…5If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit–fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Living to your fullest potential!

Walking worthy of your calling!

Knowing Him who calls you!

2. The repetition of inviting.

Acts 13:52 (MontgomeryNT) As for the disciples, they were continually filled with joy, and with the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:18 (TEV) Do not get drunk with wine, which will only ruin you; instead, be filled with the Spirit.

3. The diligence of watching.

Mark 14:38 (ESV) Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

  • Have you ever been especially aware of the Holy Spirit’s empowering in a specific situation or moment? How did you perceive the presence of the Holy Spirit at that time, or what made you aware of his presence?
  • In your own experience, in what ways does the guidance of the Holy Spirit come to you? Is it primarily (or exclusively) through the words of Scripture? If so, are there times when certain Scripture passages seem to come alive or speak with great relevance & forcefulness to you at the moment? How do you know when this is happening? If the Holy Spirit’s guidance has come to you in other ways in addition to speaking through the words of Scripture, what have those other ways been?
  • What part of a person is most affected by the conversion experience — one’s temperament, character, or personality? Explain your thoughts.
  • Discuss and review the nine characteristics of the Spirit-filled life as described in Galatians 5:22-23. For each characteristic, why is this quality possible only through the power of the Holy Spirit?
  • If the Holy Spirit can transform the weaknesses of our temperament, why aren’t all Christians transformed?
  • Talk with your kids this week about the “Fruits of the Spirit.” Explain that these are called “fruits” because they are the evidence of having Jesus in our hearts. Just like we know a tree is an orange tree because we can see the oranges growing on it, people see our kindness, gentleness, peace, etc. and know we are this way because of Jesus. Memorize the nine Fruits of the Spirit together (Galatians 5:22-23) and perhaps identify one to focus or work on each day. Talk about how you would display self-control or patience in the morning & then at dinner or bedtime, let each child talk about what they were able to do that day. Remind them that just as a tree grows & matures, so do we. If we’ll keep working on it & asking the Holy Spirit for help, we’ll develop the Fruits of the Spirit!
