A City On A Hill

Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV) “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

How I conduct myself in the workplace is an offering to Jesus.

Philippians 1:27 (NLT) Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.

Philippians 1:29 (NLT) For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.

Remembering that God forgave me through Christ Jesus keeps my heart compassionate toward others.

Romans 5:6 (NLT) When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

Ephesians 2:8 (AMP) For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God;…

What if I still feel critical?

Matthew 7:7 (NLT) “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”

“Whatever needs to be transformed, take it to Jesus in prayer. And do not stop until you experience an incredible transformation either in your world or in how you see it.” -Doug Newton-

Romans 12:2 (NLT) Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Three practical steps to being a witness for Jesus

1. Take the initiative.

Matthew 7:12 (NIV) “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Galatians 5:13-15 (NIV) You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.

2. Be obedient. It’s not a feeling, it’s a decision.

Philippians 2:13-15 (CEV) God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him. Do everything without grumbling or arguing. Then you will be the pure and innocent children of God. You live among people who are crooked and evil, but you must not do anything they can say is wrong. Try to shine as lights among the people of this world.

John 14:26 (NLT) “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

What a friend we have in Jesus,

All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit.

O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer.

-Joseph M. Scriven-

3. Bear fruit.

Galatians 5:22-26 (NLT) But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Talk It Over
  • The Bible uses imagery of a lamp on a stand or a city on a hill to help us understand that we are seen by others. How brightly are you shining in your universe? Like a 300-watt bulb? 100 watts? A nightlight? Why? How can Jesus enable you to “shine brighter?”
  • Has the idea of your peers viewing you as a representation of what it means to be a follower of Jesus ever crossed your mind? If not, how might you practically begin to live in such a way that brings glory to God?
  • We often forget the forgiveness that God offers us through Jesus. How might you regularly bring that back to your attention? Quiet time in God’s word? Listening to worship music? Talking with a fellow believer about your struggles and victories? Take one of these steps this week.
  • What person or group of people in your life can you connect with to begin to take the three practical steps Will mentioned in the outline?
  • Parents: Talk with your kids about obedience this week. Help them with the concept that it is a decision, not a feeling. It’s important to obedient to parents and teachers, but even more important to be obedient to God. Remind them that God doesn’t love us because we are obedient, but we are obedient because of how much we love God.
