The God Who Names You

John 10:3 (NIV) The sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

Genesis 17:5, 15 (NLT) “I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram. Instead, you will be called Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations…” Then God said to Abraham, “Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah.”

Judges 6:12 (NIV) When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.”

God has an identity for you.

Matthew 16:2526 (NLT) Try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul.

The World’s Way – Identity Formation:

1 John 2:1517 (BBE) Have no love for the world or for the things which are in the world. If any man has love for the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Because everything in the world, the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but of the world. And the world and its desires is coming to an end: but he who does God’s pleasure is living forever.

I am what I feel.

1 John 2:16 (BBE) “…the desire of the flesh…”

I am what I have.

1 John 2:16 (BBE) “…the desire of the eyes…”

I am what I accomplish.

1 John 2:16 (BBE) “…the pride of life…”

The Biblical Alternative:

1. Beholding who God is.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV) And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

2. Believing what God says about you.

Jeremiah 31:34 (NIV) The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with lovingkindness. I will build you up again.”

1 John 4:1619 (NIV) And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.

3. Inviting God to name you.

Revelation 2:17, 3:12 (NIV) To him who overcomes…I will give him a white stone with a new name written on it… I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name.
