All By My Selfie

We’re more connected, yet are lonelier than ever!

Psalm 142:4 (NAS) “Look to the right and see; For there is no one who regards me; There is no escape for me; No one cares for my soul.”

There’s a perfect storm of isolation today.

The conditions for it:

John 16:32 (NKJV) “Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.”

Safeguards against a “false intimate”

1. We’re created for relationships.

Genesis 2:18 (TEV) Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him.”

Proverbs 18:1 (HCSB) One who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound judgment.

2. We’re only fulfilled by relationships.

Our need for love, significance, security & competence.

Psalm 68:6 (NLT) God places the lonely in families.

Isaiah 46:3-4 (NIV) “I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth.  Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”

Deuteronomy 33:27 (NIV) The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.

Psalm 27:10 (NLT) “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.”

Psalm 16:8 (NIV) “I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

3. We’re truly redeemed in relationship!

1 John 4:10, 16-17, 19 (NAS) This is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins… We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us…because as he is, so also are we in this world…We love, because he first loved us.

4. We’ll get fully restored & developed through relationships.

Romans 12:9-18 (NIV)  Love must be sincere…Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves… Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil…If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Honoring respectfully.

Accepting genuinely.

Responding positively.

Connecting deeply.

Assisting appropriately.

  • Parents, this weekend your elementary kids looked at the story of Thomas who doubted the death and resurrection of Christ. Through his story, we showed kids that Jesus wants us to believe in Him. As a family, look up John 12:25-26 to see what Jesus himself had to say about believing. For more to talk about together, check out the Things To Do At Home portion of your child’s handout. Parents of younger children, check out the Parent Cue to talk with your kids about Peter and the beginning of the church.
