Friend Request

Proverbs 22:24-25 (NLT) Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.

What Not To Do In Making Friends:

1. Don’t wait to initiate because all it will do is frustrate you.

2. Don’t expect instant connections.

Be a friend to gain a friend

Don’t try to push friendship

What To Do In Making Friends:

Be honest – they’ll thank you later.

Ephesians 4:15 (NIV) Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

Be prayerful.

1 Thessalonians 1:2 (NLT) We always thank God for all of you and pray for you constantly.

How often do you pray for your friends?

Do you pray about their needs?

Do you pray about their fears?

Do you pray about their dreams and what they want to become?

3. Be selfless – it’s not about you.

Philippians 2:2-4 (NIV) Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

John 15:12-13 (NLT) This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

4. Be vulnerable – it creates an instant connection.

2 Corinthians 2:4 (NIV) For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

If you are looking for a friend who will just listen to you…that’s not a friend…it’s a pet!

5. Be fun!

Ecclesiastes 8:15 (NCV) So I decided it was more important to enjoy life. The best that people can do here on earth is to eat, drink, and enjoy life, because these joys will help them do the hard work God gives them here on earth.

Colossians 3:12-15 (NLT) Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Study & Discussion Questions
  • Be honest – Think of three of your closest friends. Write down one area where you could help them grow in their dating, marriage, parenting, or job. Have at least one truthful conversation with a friend this week.
  • Be prayerful – Decide to pray for at least three friends every day for a month. You’ll notice you become more aware of their needs and you’ll also begin to see God answering by doing things you couldn’t do yourself.
  • Be selfless – What are some ways that you can put a friend’s interests before your own today?
  • Be vulnerable – What are things in your heart that you can share today that will make your friends feel close to you?
  • Be fun – What are some fun things you can do to enjoy your friendships together?
  • Parents, this month Elementary-aged students are learning about Joy! God-sized Joy. Our memory verse for this month is found in Philippians 4:4. As a family, look up that verse. Then talk about times when Joy feels easy. When does having Joy feel difficult? Look up Jeremiah 29:11 together. Discuss together how knowing God has plans for our lives can help us live with Joy in the good times and the bad. For more information about what your child learned, check out their student handout or the Parent Cue if you are the parent of young children.
