The Single Greatest Gift

Matthew 13:44-46 (NLT) “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

1. Be willing to enter the zone of the unknown.

Matthew 5:13 (NLT) “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”

2. Listen for the spirit’s promptings.

Matthew 10:19-20 (ESV) Do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

There’s a thought in my mind.

There’s a tug on my heart.

There’s a _______________________.

3. Just walk.

Romans 5:8 (TNIV) “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Philippians 2:5-11 (NCV) In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus. Christ himself was like God in everything. But he did not think that being equal with God was something to be used for his own benefit. But he gave up his place with God and made himself nothing. He was born to be a man and became like a servant. And when he was living as a man, he humbled himself and was fully obedient to God, even when that caused his death—death on a cross. So God raised him to the highest place. God made his name greater than every other name so that every knee will bow to the name of Jesus— everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. And everyone will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and bring glory to God the Father.

  • Who gave you the greatest gift of your life by introducing you to Jesus? A parent? Sunday school teacher? A friend? Co-worker? Have you ever gone back to them to thank them for making the choice to help you know God?

  • Reread Matthew 13:44-46. Compared to the man and the merchant, how valuable is the kingdom to you and why? Share your thoughts with your group.

  • Had you ever considered what Christ gave up when he “walked across the cosmos” for you? His kingship, community, comfort, etc. Leaving everything that was perfect to come to the embodiment of imperfection to reach you? Spend some time in prayer and gratitude before Him for the overwhelming gift of love.

  • When have you felt the Holy Spirit prompting you to do something? Have you felt that tug on your heart? Had a thought in your mind? What does that look like for you? Pray for God to open your heart and mind to be aware of the supernatural power upon you so you can respond in obedience.

  • What holds you back from “just walking across the room” to share Jesus with someone? Is it a fear of the unknown that is preventing you from taking that first step? Have you ever felt prompted to reach out to someone but didn’t? Why?

  • Ask your children: “When you have great news, who do you want to share it with first? Your best friend? Your buddy on the soccer team? Your sister/brother?” How about the great news of how much Jesus loves you – have you shared that with them? Help your kids understand that they don’t have to wait till they’re grown up to tell others about Christ! They can tell their story right now! Talk about where they can “walk across the playground, classroom, etc. to tell someone about the greatest gift they’ve ever received – a relationship with Jesus.
