The truth about what you believe:
1. My beliefs are my choice.
Romans 1:26 (TLB) Instead of believing what they know was the truth about God, they deliberately chose to believe lies…
2. My beliefs determine my behavior.
Proverbs 4:23 (GN) Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.
3. The world has taught me many false beliefs.
1 John 4:1 (TLB) Don’t always believe everything you hear. . . for there are many false teachers around.
4. Untrue beliefs are much of the cause of my emotional problems and unhappiness.
John 8:32 (TLB) “…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
5. The only source of absolute truth is God.
Romans 3:4 (NCV) God will continue to be true even when every person is false.
Luke 21:33 (TLB) “Though all heaven and earth shall pass away, yet my words remain forever true.”
Hebrews 6:18 (NAS) …it is impossible for God to lie…
6. Building my life on the foundation of God’s truth is a key to emotional health and stability.
Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV) “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
Steps to freedom: a commitment
Romans 12:2 (GW) Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing, and perfect.
1. I commit myself to seeking the truth.
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (TLB) There is going to come a time when people won’t listen to the truth but will go around looking for teachers who will tell them just what they want to hear. They won’t listen to what the Bible says but will blithely follow their own misguided ideas.
1 Timothy 4:7 (NCV) Don’t follow foolish stories that disagree with God’s truth…
1 Timothy 3:15 (TLB) …the church of the living God contains and holds high the truth of God.
2. I commit myself to living the truth.
Ephesians 4:14-15 (TLB) We will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth. Instead we will lovingly follow the truth at all times – speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly – and so become more and more in every way like Christ…
2 Corinthians 4:2 (GN) In the full light of truth we live…
3. I commit myself to believing the truth.
John 14:6 (NIV) Jesus said: “…I am the truth.”
2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 (TLB) …they are on their way to hell because they have said no to the truth; they have refused to believe it and love it and let it save them, so God will allow them to believe lies with all their hearts.
