Pastor Steve Williams : Breaking Your Bondage to Regret

Life Beyond Regrets · 40:30 · Recorded September 16, 2018

2 Corinthians 7:8-10 (NIV) “I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while…now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”

Getting stuck in the ‘Sorry Cycle’

Regrets of ACTION

Regrets of INACTION

Regrets of REACTION

Breaking through the cycle

1. Thoroughly RECOGNIZE your regrets!

Proverbs 28:13 (BBE) He who keeps his sins secret will not do well; but one who is open about them, and gives them up, will get mercy.

Wringing the benefits from our regrets:

They turn us away from wrong.

Psalm 119:71 (NLT) “My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.”

They wean us off of our foolish pride.

James 4:6 (ESV) “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Psalm 51:17 (MSG) “I learned God-worship when my pride was shattered. Heart-shattered lives ready for love don’t for a moment escape God’s notice.”

They offer valuable insights about us!

Psalm 51:6 (NAS) “Behold, you desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part you will make me know wisdom.”

They help us cut some slack to others.

They give us something to offer to others.

They prompt greater worship from us.

Luke 7:47 (NLT) “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”

1 Timothy 1:16-17 (NLT) “God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. All honor and glory to God forever and ever!”

They make us billboards to grace!

2. Gratefully RELEASE your regrets.

Isaiah 38:17 (CSB) “It was for my own well-being that I had such intense bitterness; but your love has delivered me from the pit of destruction, for you have thrown all my sins behind your back.”

3. Courageously REDEEM your regrets.

Psalm 3:3 (ESV) “You, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.”

  • Review the three types of regrets highlighted in this series. What is a “regret of action” or “inaction” you remember having as a grade schooler? How did it finally get resolved for you?

  • Which of the three types of regrets would you say you’re most likely to get stuck in ‘The Sorry Cycle’ over? Why?

  • What do you wish you’d known a long time ago about God that would have helped you in handling regrets? What do you think he (God) most wishes you’d known a long time ago with regard to your regrets?

  • Look over the list of 7 “benefits” that can be wrung from our regrets. Are there any that you didn’t understand/need clarification on? Are there any that are especially encouraging or insightful for you in getting out or staying out of the ‘sorry spin cycle’?

  • Can you give a specific example of seeing one of those 7 benefits in your own experience or someone else you’ve observed?

  • Read the story in Luke 7:36-50. How has your experience of God’s grace increased your “worship quotient” toward God? How do you think it made this woman feel to hear Jesus speak verse 50 to her? How does it make you feel to hear him saying that to you? How can that help you to break out of your own ‘Sorry Cycle’ habit? How can your group pray for you about this?

  • Elementary Parents, today we looked at an amazing story from the Old Testament that is a wonderful display of God’s power. Ask your children who God used in our story to do great things. (Gideon) In order that everyone would know that it was God who won the battle for his people, he sent Gideon and his army of 300 men into battle against an army of 135,000! Gideon and his men won handily! Clearly this was all about God’s power at work and not about the power of 300 men. Our bottom line is God gives you the power to do great things.
