Romans 8:29 (NRSV) For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.

 

What does it mean to become like Christ?

To become like Jesus Christ means to become fully alive.

John 7:8-10 (NIV) Therefore Jesus said again, “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

 

How do I become like Christ?

Romans 8:28 (NIV) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

 

1. Jesus faced trouble (trials).

 

• God uses trouble to teach me to trust him.

Romans 5:3-4 (NLT) We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

Mark 14:32-36 (NIV) They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

 

2. Jesus faced temptations.

James 1:13 (NIV) When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone…

 

• God uses temptation as an opportunity learn to do the right thing.

Matthew 4:10 (NIV) “Get out of here, Satan. The scriptures say worship only the Lord God and obey only him.”

Philippians 4:8 (NIV) Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Galatians 5:16 (NLT) So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (CEV) You’re better off to have a friend than to be all alone,… If you fall, your friend can help you up.

 

3. Jesus faced trespasses.

 

• God uses trespasses to teach me to forgive.

Matthew 6:12 (NMB) “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.”

Luke 23:34 (NIV) Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Ephesians 4:32 (CEV) Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ.

 

Growing Deeper Together

Use these points throughout the week as part of your quiet time, in your small group, or over coffee with a friend to help you apply what you learned in today’s message.

What trial, temptation, or trespass are you dealing with right now? Surrender it to God and take one of these steps to move forward in dealing with it God’s way:
– This week, reach out to a believing friend or call someone from your small group to meet to pray and talk through a struggle you’re facing.
– Attend Celebrate Recovery (Wednesday at 6:30pm) to begin dealing with the temptation you’re facing.
– Spend daily time in prayer being completely honest with God about areas of unforgiveness in your life. Ask for his help in growing in mercy and extending forgiveness where needed.

As you grow in maturity, how will you step out and help others? Find a way to share what you know. Volunteer in the Prayer Room after service to pray with and for others, sign up to be a table leader in Men’s or Women’s Bible Study, identify an area of experience and open your home to a study or support group. Keep growing by helping others to grow!
