God Can Use Anybody!

Romans 12:1 (TEV) So then, my friends, because of God’s great mercy to us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should offer.

1 John 4:19 (TEV) We love because God first loved us.

Galatians 1:1315 (NLT) “You know what I was like… how I violently persecuted Christians. I did my best to get rid of them! …But then something happened! For it pleased God in His kindness to choose me and called me, even before I was born! What undeserved mercy!”

Paul’s secrets of staying useable:

1. Never forget it’s all because of God’s mercy.

2 Corinthians 4:1 (TLB) It is God himself, in His mercy, who has given us this wonderful work [of telling his Good News to others], and so we never give up.

Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.

Ephesians 2:35 (MSG) It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sindead lives and made us alive in Christ.

2. Be your real self!

2 Corinthians 4:2 (NCV) We teach the truth plainly, showing everyone who we are. Then they can know in their hearts what kind of people we are in God’s sight.

Cost of NOT being yourself:

You’ll always be under stress.

You’ll live in fear of being exposed.

Romans 8:15 (NCV) The Spirit we received does not make us slaves again to fear; it makes us children of God.

3. Remember, it’s not about you!

2 Corinthians 4:5, 7 (CEV) We are not preaching about ourselves. Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord…We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us.

4. Use your pain to help others!

2 Corinthians 11:2328 (NCV) 23I have been in prison more often. I have been hurt more in beatings. I have been near death many times. 24Five times the Jews have given me their punishment of thirty nine lashes with a whip. 25Three different times I was beaten with rods. One time I was almost stoned to death. Three times I was in ships that wrecked, and one of those times I spent a night and a day in the sea. 26I have gone on many travels and have been in danger from rivers, thieves, my own people, the Jews, and those who are not Jews. I have been in danger in cities, in places where no one lives, and on the sea. And I have been in danger with false Christians. 27I have done hard and tiring work, and many times I did not sleep. I have been hungry and thirsty, and many times I have been without food. I have been cold and without clothes. 28Besides all this, there is on me every day the load of my concern for all the churches.

2 Corinthians 4:15 (NCV) All these things are for you. And so the grace of God that is being given to more and more people will bring increasing thanks to God for his glory.

5. Stay focused on eternity!

2 Corinthians 4:1718 (NCV) We have small troubles for a while now, but they are helping us gain an eternal glory that is much greater than the troubles. We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see. What we see will last only a short time, but what we cannot see will last forever.

Why do you think it is important to be authentic when God uses us for his purposes? What is wrong with trying to model our behavior after a successful person or mimic the behavior of someone else who is serving God well?

Read Romans 8:15 aloud. For people who consider letting God use them, fears about problems they had earlier in their lives are often serious impediments. What are some things such people might be afraid of? How do you think God feels about this?

What was the greatest takeaway from today’s message? What was the biggest challenge for you? What was the greatest encouragement? What do you remember most about the weekend message?

When you carry God’s message to others, you can have more strength if you believe that you are merely God’s servant working for Jesus’ sake. If you sensed or experienced some real power in the past that came from God and not yourself, what was that like? What is it that made you sense it was coming from God?

Reflect on 2 Corinthians 4:5. How could focusing on yourself instead of focusing on Jesus contribute to becoming either bitter or prideful?

2 Corinthians 4:15 says “All these sufferings of ours are for your benefit.” Share how one of your greatest pains might contribute to helping others.

Parents, today your elementary children learned how forgiving others is an act of mercy, which we have defined as love in action. Ask your children who was forgiven in our Bible story today. What had he done that needed to be forgiven? We want kids to understand that God makes it clear in his Word that we must forgive others just as he forgave us. Our bottom Line is: I can show mercy to others by forgiving them.
