Pastor Steve Williams : Sexuality… What a Gift!

Money, Sex & Power · 45:10 · Recorded May 31, 2015

“Sexuality…What a Gift!”

Genesis 2:18, 20-25 (HCSB) Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper as his complement.” …The man gave names to all…but for the man no helper was found as his complement. So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. Then the LORD God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. And the man said: “This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken from man.” This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.

God’s positive purposes for “great sex”

1. Identity – the personing found in sexuality.

Genesis 1:27-28 (NJB)  God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.  God blessed them, saying to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Be masters of…all the living creatures.”

2. Fertility – the creating potential of sex.

Malachi 2:15 (NLT) “Didn’t the LORD make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.”

3. Intimacy – the bonding power in sex.

1 Corinthians 6:13-20 (NIV)   The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.  Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.  Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Ephesians 4:19 (HCSB)  They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more.

4. Intensity – the pleasuring capacity of sex.

Song of Songs 4:12, 16-5:1 (NIV)  [GROOM] “You are a garden locked up, my sister, my bride; you are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.”…[BRIDE] “Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread abroad. Let my lover come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.” [GROOM] “I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine and my milk.” [FRIENDS] “Eat, O friends, and drink; drink your fill, O lovers.”

Proverbs 5:15-19 (NLT) Drink water from your own well— share your love only with your wife.  Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone? You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers. Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth…Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love.

5. Purity – the liberating protection of sexuality.

1 Thessalonians 4:2-8 (NIV) You know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 21:30 (NIV)  There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.

6. Mutuality – the sensitizing maturity of sexuality.

Song of Songs 6:3 (NAS)   [BRIDE] “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine…”

1 Corinthians 7:3-5 (NLT)  The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs.  The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife.  Do not deprive each other of sexual relations…

Ephesians 5:28-32 (HCSB) Husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.  For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, since we are members of his body. ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church.

7. Mystery – the integrating discovery of sexuality.

  • When the word “sex” is used at Church, what feelings do you think it evokes in people, and why? How did you learn about “the birds and the bees?” How do you wish you’d learned differently?
  • What’s your reaction to this statement by next week’s guest, speaker, author and counselor Joe Dallas: “Christians are sexual persons, living in a sexually idolatrous environment, trying to live sexually pure lives.” What ideas from this message make you feel energized to live with sexual integrity?
  • Which scriptures in this message speak powerfully to you about obeying God in our sexuality? What’s your reaction to this quote by Christian author & therapist David Seamands, “Unless people come to peace with both God and sexuality, they’ll never really be comfortable with either one.”?
  • Which of the ideas about God’s design for sexuality do you find most intriguing?Difficult to grasp? If your group could formulate some facebook questions for God to answer about sexuality, what would some of them be?
  • What do you feel most challenged about by God on this topic?
  • This message is a great reminder of the need to help your children appreciate that God made us male & female and our genders are to be appreciated and lived out as his image. Depending on their ages this can be a fun and instructive talk! Highlight some of the common differences they see between boys and girls, men and women. Explain that this is part of God’s plan for his world. Even very young children can be taught that God made Mommies and Daddies to make families and care for children like them. Is it time for you to have “the talk” with your older children? Perhaps a start would be your seeking good resources to guide you in your discussion. Focusonthefamily.com is a great Christian site with links to online resources to help you prepare. (If you get stuck – call Pastor Eddie – he’s our in-house expert!!)
