Sexuality and Culture Today

Romans 6:13-14 (NIV) Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5,7-8 (NIV) For this is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God…For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.

What’s made us so “numb”?

We’ve deified it. Sex is the ultimate thing!

We’ve diminished it. Sex is no big deal.

Proverbs 6:27-28 (NIV) Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?

We’ve degraded it. Sex is a dirty thing.

What does God say?

Sex is good because I am good!

Genesis 2:25 (NIV) The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Song of Songs 2:16-17 (NIV) My lover is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies. Until the day breaks and the shadows flee, turn, my lover, and be like a gazelle or like a young stag on the rugged hills.

Ephesians 5:31-32 (NIV) “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery but I am talking about Christ and the church.

Sex is holy because I’ve made it holy.

Hebrews 13:4 (MSG) Honor marriage and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband. God draws a firm line against casual and illicit sex.

Sex, done right, can actually help make you holy!

What should my response to God be?

1. Acknowledge the value of the human person.

Genesis 1:27 (NCV) So God created human beings in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created them male and female.

2. Make a covenant with your eyes.

Job 31:1 (NLT2) “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.”

3. Get willing to do the hard work!

James 1:2-4 (GW) My brothers and sisters, be very happy when you are tested in different ways. You know that such testing of your faith produces endurance. Endure until your testing is over. Then you will be mature and complete, and you won’t need anything.

4. Walk closely with Jesus every day!

John 15:5 (Phillips NT) For just as the branch cannot bear any fruit unless it shares the life of the vine, so you can produce nothing unless you go on growing in me.

5. Never forget the cross.

What is the most significant thing you’ve learned from this week’s message? How has this message or series affected your life?

When in your life, past or present, have you been burned when “playing with fire” (see Proverbs 6:27-28)? How does this passage suggest you keep your life pure?

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8. What do you say to someone who believes you can do anything you want, as long as you mind your own business, and no one gets hurt? Would you say anything different to a Christian who believes the same thing about sexual freedom? If so, what?

How will a lifestyle that bears witness to God affect sexual morality?

Where do you need to be dead to sin but alive to God?

As a branch on Christ’s vine, how would you describe the fruit in your life: Grade A1? Juicy? Green? Wormy? Why?
(See John 15:5-7).
