BFFs

Psalm 133:1 (NLT) How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers (close friends) live together in harmony!

Acts 2:42-47 (NLT) All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Mark 3 points us to…

Jesus modeling relational interdependence.

Daniel 2:17-19 (NIV) Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision.

Acts 4:13, 23, 24 (NLT) The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. 23As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said. 24 When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God…

We need each other.

John 17:23 (NLT) Jesus’ prayer for unity “I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”

The struggle is real

1 Corinthians 15:33b (NLT) “bad company corrupts good character.”

Proverbs 22:24-25 (MSG) Don’t hang out with angry people;
don’t keep company with hotheads. Bad temper is contagious—don’t get infected.

How to be a Friend

John 15:13 (NLT) “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Biblical friendship sacrifices for others.

Proverbs 27:17 (NLT) As iron sharpens iron, so, a friend sharpens a friend.

Biblical friendship makes the other person better.

Talk It Over

Acts 4:13 tells us that Peter and John were untrained, and people were amazed at what being with Jesus had done for them. A changed life convinces people of Christ’s power. How have you changed your life as a believer in Christ? Are there areas in your life that are lacking change? What steps can you take to remedy that?

Pastor Kevin spoke abut how we need each other and need healthy friendships. Jesus models relational interdependence for us. Many people struggle to make new friendships. Are you a part of a small group? If so, how has that affected your relationship with Christ and other believers? If you are not in a small group, what is holding you back?

Read Proverbs 27:17. Mental sharpness comes from being around good people. Biblical friendships require partners to challenge one another, to focus on the idea (or problem) without involving their egos. What does this type of friendship look like to you? Is this something you have currently in your life, or something you are striving for?

David stated in Psalm 133:1 that harmony is pleasant. Living in harmony doesn’t mean that we will agree on everything, but we must agree on our purpose in life-to work together for God. How can your outward expression of harmony with others reflect the inward harmony of purpose?

Parents: Read Psalm 133:1 together with you family. Together brainstorm ways you can all work towards unity this week. Can you help a sibling or parent with their chores? Does unity mean making an effort of getting along with one another? Sharing toys? Donating items you no longer use to those in need? Simply spending time together as a family? Whatever you decide to do, make a note of it and place it on your fridge as a reminder to work together this week!
