Sticks and Stones

Recognize the reality of violence in our world.

1. Resist turning a blind eye.

Romans 12:2 (MSG) Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

2. Resist dismissing your own desires.

Genesis 1:27 (ESV) So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Exodus 20:13 (ESV) You shall not murder.

Matthew 5:21-22 (ESV) You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

Deuteronomy 32:35a (CSB) Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay.

Human Life is Sacred…

1. It’s priceless.

You can’t put a price on it. It’s infinite in value, and every single human life is infinite in value.

2. It’s not yours.

You are held accountable to God for every life that comes into your presence and how you treat them.

3. Every human being is made in the image of God.

This means divine glory rests on every human being. God has put his stamp on us. God has put his sign of ownership on us.

Making it Personal

Managing your own anger.

Matthew 5:21-22 (NLT) “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

Maneuver your own life into the lives of others.

Matthew 25:35-36 (NLT2) For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’

Make sure your own heart is clean and pure.

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

PLEASE NOTE: The subjects dealt with in this series are eliciting strong emotions that are easily exploited today. It’s VERY likely there are persons in your group who don’t look at these exactly like you do. Begin your discussion time with prayer, claiming Colossians 3:15.

When discussing the topic of violence in our world today, what is your honest first thought?

According to Romans Chapter 12:2, have you become too well adjusted to your world that you fit into it without thinking? Why or Why not?

Read James 4:1-2. How would you personally respond to this passage? Do you think this accurately describes how fights often begin? Discuss with your small group.

Maybe you haven’t brought physical violence into your relationships before, but what about verbal violence? Have your words ever “hurt” others or potentially “murdered” a person’s reputation through gossip or other verbal actions?

Do you value all human life as being made in the image of God? How can doing this change your perspective on life? What would this world look like if we all did this?
