Remarkable Generosity

2 Corinthians 9:6–15 (NIV) 6Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” 10Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 12This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Why we need to talk about it:

It’s tremendously practical.

Mark 4:19 (NIV) …but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.

Proverbs 23:4–5 (NIV) Do not wear yourself out to get rich;  Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.

The Bible talks all about money.

There can be no significant spiritual growth unless you put your attitude toward money in God’s hands.

The impact of remarkable generosity:

The impact of biblical generosity is two-fold –

Remarkable generosity will help people practically and will help people praise God.

“Material” and “Immaterial”

Four qualities of the earliest Christians:

1. Had a complete absence of racism.

2. Held a high view of life.

3. Had an unusual view of sex.

4. Were remarkably generous!

Their motivations for generosity:

Psalm 89:11 (HCSB) The heavens are Yours; the earth also is Yours. The world and everything in it—You founded them.

1 Chronicles 29:12–14 (NCV) Riches and honor come from you. You rule everything. You have the power and strength to make anyone great and strong. Now, our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name. “These things did not really come from me and my people. Everything comes from you; we have given you back what you gave us.

How do I know I’m giving enough?

Ask yourself two questions:

What has God done for me?

What is going to take to get “the Gospel work” done?

Malachi 3:10–12 (NIV) Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,“ says the LORD Almighty, ”and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.  I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,“ says the LORD Almighty. ”Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land," says the LORD Almighty.
