The Healer of the Nations

1 Peter 1:10-11 (NIV) Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

Luke 24:27 (CSB) Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.

Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament

In symbolic ritual & rites.

In unfulfilled destinies and longings.

For a heroic deliverer

For truly godly leadership

Amos 5:15, 24 (NIV) Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy…Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

2 Samuel 8:15 (CSB) David reigned over all Israel, administering justice and righteousness for all his people.

For healing of soul-sickness

Isaiah 59:14-15 (CSB) Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far off. For truth has stumbled in the public square, and honesty cannot enter. Truth is missing…The LORD saw that there was no justice, and he was offended.

Isaiah 9:7 (NIV) Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

In the prophetic visions of promise.

Jeremiah 33:15-16 (NIV) “In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.”

Amos’ powerful message

  1. Wrongs cannot go unpunished forever.

Amos 4:12 (CSB) “Since I will do that to you Israel, prepare to meet your God!”

  1. God won’t overlook any evil nor let the guilty slide.

Exodus 34:6-7 (CSB) “The LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished.”

Amos 5:18-19 (NIV) “Why do you long for the day of the LORD? That day will be darkness, not light. It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him.”

  1. God loves to destroy sinners by turning them to him.

Ezekiel 33:11 (NAS) “As I live!” declares the Lord GOD, “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!”

Amos 5:4, 6, 14 (CSB) For the LORD says to the house of Israel: “Seek me and live!…Seek the LORD and live…Pursue good and not evil so that you may live, and the LORD, the God of Armies will be with you.”

  1. God’s savior will make things right forever!

Amos 9:11-12 (NAS) “In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David, and wall up its breaches I will also raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old; That they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the LORD who does this.

John 1:14 (NIV) The Word [Jesus of Nazareth] became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

Amos 2:6; 8:9 (CSB) “They sell a righteous person for silver…In that day”—this is the declaration of the Lord GOD—“I will make the sun go down at noon; I will darken the land in the daytime.”

Isaiah 53:5 (NIV) He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Psalm 22:27-28 (NIV) All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD. All the families of the nations will bow down before you, for kingship belongs to the LORD; he rules the nations.
