Mark 10:17-25 (CSB) 17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.” 20 He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But he was dismayed by this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were astonished at his words. Again, Jesus said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
You see the kingdom when you choose to follow the king today.
Things that get in the way of seeing the kingdom:
1. Your performance.
Mark 10:17-18 (CSB) 17 As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone…
2. Your pride.
Mark 10:19-20 (CSB) 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.” 20 He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”
3. Your possessions.
Mark 10:21-22 (CSB) 21 Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 But he was dismayed by this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions
How to see the kingdom:
• Admit you are not good.
Ephesians 2:1-3 (ESV) 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that I now at work in the sons of disobedience – 3 among whom we all once lived on the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
• Trust that Jesus saves you.
Ephesians 2:4-5 (ESV) 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved…
Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV) 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
1 John 1:9 (ESV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
• Be obedient to what he’s asking you.
John 14:15 (NLT) If you love me, obey my commandments.
Growing Deeper Together
Use these questions throughout the week as part of your quiet time, in your small group, or over coffee with a friend to help you apply what you learned in today’s message.
• Make the evaluation: Have you made a decision yet to follow God?
Have you taken that next step in your faith if you answered yes?
• Collin shared about a time he missed out due to his actions. Think of a time in your life when you missed out on God due to your actions.
How can you learn from that experience?
What led to that experience?
Was it your pride?
Material items?
– What action steps can you take this week to put God first in your life and truly “See the Kingdom”?
• Are you being obedient to what God is asking of you?
What area of your life is he asking you to step out in faith?
Is it signing up for a mission trip?
Celebrate Recovery?
Attending one of our early morning prayer sessions?
Going to a CORE Class?
Take time this week and follow through on that thing God has asked you to do!
