Following Jesus

Galatians 1:6-8 (NIV) I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!

A misbelief can actually be more dangerous than unbelief.

Your internal motivations can actually shape those beliefs.

John 6:26-29, 42, 51-54, 60-61, 64, 66-69 (NIV) …“I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life…” Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” …They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?” …Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day…” On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” …Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? …“Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” …From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Some follow Jesus just because of the example that he sets and the good deeds he does.

John 6:2 (NIV) And a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the miraculous signs he had performed on the sick.

John 6:42 (NIV) They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?”

“Example" gospel

John 6:53 (NIV) Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

Some follow Jesus because of what he can do for them.

John 6:26-27 (NIV) Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me … because you ate the loaves and had your fill.”

“Life enhancement" gospel

Some follow Jesus because He can teach them how they can earn God’s approval.

John 6:28 (NIV) They asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

“Bootstraps" gospel

How do I follow?

1. Admit you’re powerless.

John 6:67-68 (NIV) “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?”

2. Look to Him alone!

John 6:68 (NIV) “…You have the words of eternal life.”

3. Follow on His terms, NOT yours!

John 6:69 (NIV) “We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

1 Samuel 15:3, 9, 19-22 (NIV) Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them… But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs everything that was good… Why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD?” “But I did obey the LORD,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the LORD assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.” But Samuel replied: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice.
