Spiritual Warfare, Part 2

Ephesians 6:10-14a (NIV84)  Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then…

1. Real Christianity is a fight.

Act 5:3 (NLT)  Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.

The battle is desperate.

The stakes are tremendously high.

It’s for your very soul.

“Each day we are becoming a creature of splendid glory or one of unspeakable horror.”  -C.S. Lewis-

2. Christianity sees the fight is on many fronts.

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

3. The devil is mighty, yet vulnerable.

John 8:44-45 (NIV)  You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!

Daniel 10:6, 12-14 (CSB)  His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude… “Don’t be afraid, Daniel,” he said to me, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me after I had been left there with the kings of Persia. Now I have come to help you understand what will happen to your people in the last days, for the vision refers to those days.”

Isaiah 14:14 (ESV)  ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

Luke 10:18 (ESV)  And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

Ezekiel 36:26 (CEV)  ‘I will take away your stubborn heart and give you a new heart and a desire to be faithful. You will have only pure thoughts…’

The devil is on a chain.

Ephesians 4:26b-27 (NIV84)  …Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

We have the power to stand (triumph)!

Talk it Over
  • If you’d like to watch or re-watch last week’s message (Part 1), you can access it here: northpointe.org/messages.
  • Shane talked about how the battle for our souls happens on many fronts. On what fronts is the battle happening for you? Within your family? At your job? In your unbelief? Are you geared up for battle? Prayed up? Fully dressed in your armor? What steps do you need to take to be ready for the fight every day?
  • Have you ever thought of the devil as vulnerable before? In what ways do you “stand” against him? How are you fighting or opposing him? Talk about this in your small group and share your “battle plans.”
  • How do you see God’s mighty power at work in your life? Are you tapping into his power? How? Spend time in prayer today asking God to show you his power and might. Pray for deliverance from the evil one’s schemes and plans against you. Pray that you will stand in God’s power and strength and never your own. Thank him for always providing a way for you!
  • Parents:  Work with your kids this week to memorize Ephesians 6:10, Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Talk to them about the ways the devil can try to come against us (unforgiveness, bitterness, acting out in anger, etc.) and remind them that God promises us his power, his MIGHTY power! When we’re standing with Jesus, we can stand against anything the devil can throw at us!
