Strategies of Darkness, Part 1

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV84)  10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayer requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep praying for all the saints.

1. The devil is mighty.

1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)  Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

2. The devil is wily.

Wily means methodical.

The devil is good at deception.

Matthew 4:1-11 (NLT)  1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. 3During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” 7Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’” 8Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9“I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” 10“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’” 11Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.

3. The devil is vulnerable.

Colossians 2:15 (NIV84)  And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

James 4:7 (NLT)  So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Armor Up Daily!

•        Put on humility every day.

Colossians 3:12 (NLT)  Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

•        Put on armor every day.

Ephesians 6:13-18 (NIV84)  13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

•        We are in this together!

Ephesians 6:13-18 (NIV84)  And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Talk It Over

  • When we talk about the devil being mighty…What comes to your mind? Are you experiencing the devil this way now? How can we (or your group) be praying for you?
  • Talking about the devil being wily, does it make sense to you that he operates with precise timing and methods to disrupt or attack your life? Maybe discuss a time you can recall that being the case. How did you handle it?
  • Explain a time where you feel like the devil deceived you and how did you handle that? Did it lead to difficulty? Where you able to speak scripture back to him?
  • Let’s be real and honest…How long has it been since you thought through putting your armor on? Does the idea of first putting on humility help you to think through what putting the armor on really looks like?
