A Vision for the Future

1 Corinthians 9:16; 19-27 (ESV) 16For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 19For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Proverbs 29:18 (KJV) Where there is no vision people perish.

Vision- is seeing the invisible and turning it into reality.

Philippians 2:12-13 (NIV) Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

When it’s a vision from the Lord:

• It challenges you to reach higher.

3 components to God’s vision for you:

2 Peter 1:5:9 (NIV) 5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

Titus 2:11-12 (NIV) For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives…

The building of your character.

Ephesians 1:4-5 (NIV) 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

Romans 5:12, 14, 18-19 (NASB) 12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned… 14Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. 18Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

Ambition for the gospel.

Mark 16:15 (NIV) He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

1 Corinthians 9:23 (NIV) 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel…

2 Timothy 2:10 (NASB) For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.

2 Corinthians 12:15 (BSB) And for the sake of your souls, I will most gladly spend my money and myself. If I love you more, will you love me less?

The glory of God.

• It’ll push you to run farther.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV) I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV) And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

Going after it

1. Seize your personal responsibility.

Acts 1:8 (NIV) “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Matthew 4:19 (BSB) “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

2. Live with an open availability.

3. Employ compassionate adaptability.

Acts 17:22-24 (NASB) 22So Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in all respects.23For while I was passing through and examining the objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth…”

Luke 7:34 (NIV) The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’

Matthew 5:13 (NIV) You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

4. Recognize your ultimate accountability.

Talk It Over

Why are discipline and self-control necessary tools for those who work to share the gospel? Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

What are some practical ways to keep your eyes on Jesus each day?

Ephesians 1:4-5 tells us that as Christians we are adopted into God’s family. What does that mean? How does that change your perspective on family?

When do you feel “useless or unfruitful” as a follower of Jesus? What makes you feel that way? What can you do when you have those feelings?

When have you recently been tempted to step away from God’s kingdom and follow the ways of the world? What was so tempting? How can you combat that temptation in the future?
Parents: Did you ever take a physical fitness test? Try some of these as a family: 5 push-ups, 10 sit ups, touch your toes 5 times, run around outside or inside your house 3 times without stopping. Now grab a glass of water and REST! Discuss as a family if any of these exercises were hard. What if you do them every day? They will not only get easier, but you will get stronger too.

Read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 together as a family. Here is a spiritual fitness test! Do you read your Bible every day and think about what God says? Do you pray every day? Do you pray for others who need special help? Do you do something loving for someone every day? Do you try to please God in everything you do?

That can seem like so much! But we need to train hard, just like we would for any sport or activity. Then we will be stronger Christians and be able to do even more for Jesus!
