A Disappointment-Resistant Faith

1. Strive to know God better.

Psalm 9:10 (NIV) Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

Hosea 6:3 (NAS) “So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD.”

2. Imitate great role models of faithfulness.

Hebrews 13:7 (NIV) …Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

Bravely accept your faith challenge!

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

3. Be willing to wait on God’s timing.

Isaiah 5:19 (HCSB) [Woe] to those who say: “Let Him hurry up and do His work quickly so that we can see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel take place so that we can know it!”

Psalm 27:13-14 (NAS) “I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.”

Isaiah 49:23 (NIV) “Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.”

4. Always give God the benefit of the doubt!

Matthew 11:6 (ICB) “The person who does not lose faith because of me is blessed.”

Deuteronomy 29:29 (ESV) “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”

“All I have seen teaches me to trust the creator for all I have not seen.”

Luke 18:8 (MSG) “But how much of that kind of persistent faith will the Son of Man find on the earth when he returns?”

Study & Discussion Questions
  • When did an initial experience of disappointment turn around into an eventual experience of happiness or satisfaction? What emotions did you experience on both ends?
  • What would you say have been some keys to getting to know God in a personal, direct way?
  • Read Hebrews 13:7b. Who are some persons who’ve shown faithfulness that you consider heroes or examples worth being inspired to imitate?
  • Read Hebrews 12:1-3. Is there a specific “race course of faith” you feel God has marked out for you to be running? How can others pray for and support you, cheering you on to the finish? What will the “finish” look like for you?
  • Read the verses included under point 3 in this message. What is the craziest thing you’ve seen someone do who got impatient while waiting on something? What does it mean to “wait on the Lord” and why is that so challenging?
  • What will be your “take away” from this message or from this series?
  • Parents of Elementary Children, today your kids learned about responsibility – proving you can be trusted with what is expected of you. Ask your child how many workers were in the story and how many were responsible. What happened for the workers who were responsible? Encourage your child by pointing out ways that they can be responsible. Our bottom line is: When you can be trusted with a little, you can be trusted with a lot.
