The God Who Loves Hide & Seek

Job 23:3, 8-9 (NIV) “If only I knew where to find him; if only I could go to his dwelling! …But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him. When he is at work in the north, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.”

Isaiah 45:15 (NIV) “Truly you are a God who hides himself, O God and Savior of Israel.”

Why God seems so hidden

1. His own design of our world.

He desires uncompelled honor.

He knows believing IS seeing.

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Jeremiah 29:13-14 (NIV) “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD.

2. Our sinful, fallen condition limits us.

We have distorted perception.

Matthew 5:8 (NIV) “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

We’ve got warped self-interest.

Romans 1:18 (HCSB) God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

We’re in confusing emotional pain.

We’ve missed his method!

Isaiah 52:10 (NAS) The LORD has bared his holy arm in the sight of all the nations, that all the ends of the earth may see the salvation of our God.

Romans 5:6-8 (NRSV) While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person… But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.

3. His tests of our faith.

He’ll step back to watch us step up!

2 Chronicles 32:31 (NLT) God withdrew from Hezekiah in order to test him and to see what was really in his heart.

He takes us to extremes to help us to excel.

Job 23:10 (NIV) “…But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.”

He turns our outrage into his outreach to make a difference.

Study & Discussion Questions
  • What’s your clearest memory of an experience of disappointment you recall from childhood?
  • Recall a time when you’ve felt a sense of disappointment with God – how do the factors identified in this message help you in processing that experience? Is there a new insight you gained from the message this week?
  • Which of the ideas discussed in this message do you feel you need to understand better? What would you say is the most encouraging thought you were impressed by from the message?
  • When you look at some of the reasons and ways God tests us mentioned in point 3, which do you relate to personally in seeing how God has used that in your life?
  • Which of the scriptures from this message seem to impact you personally this week? (Consider memorizing it this week in order to reflect more deeply on its truth.) How would you communicate the truth of the passage in your own words to someone else?
  • How do you think God wants you to think or act differently because of this message or series? Is there an experience of disappointment or confusion with God that you’re struggling with that your group could pray for you about?
  • Parents, ask your child which piece of the armor of God they learned about today from Ephesians 6:10-17. We learned that the Bible is truth. The truth in the Bible can defeat any lie we hear. We can use the Bible to stand strong when we need help. Our bottom line was: Stand strong because you know the truth.
