Understanding Life’s Parallel Dimensions

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV) We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

1. We’re living out a much larger drama than we realize.

Luke 15:10 (CEB) “There is joy before the angels of God when one sinner changes his heart.”

1 Corinthians 4:9 (NIV) God has put us apostles on display…We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.

Ephesians 3:10-11 (Phillips NT) The purpose is that all the angelic powers should now see the complex wisdom of God’s plan being worked out through the Church, in conformity to that timeless purpose which he centered in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

2. My responses mean more to God than I can know!

Job 35:6-8 (NIV) “If you sin, how does it affect him? If your sins are many, what does that do to him? If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand? Your wicked-ness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only the sons of men.”

3. I need to see beyond my present pain.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV) We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day… we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Psalm 116:15 (NAS) Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his godly ones.

4. God will make it worth it all someday!

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV) We do not lose heart… For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all…

Romans 8:18 (NIV) I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV) No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.

Study & Discussion Questions

  • Do you feel like you have a healthy, well-rounded perspective of both life on earth and eternity?
  • Have you had difficult things happen in your life that have made you focus more on an eternal perspective? Have you continued with that perspective or lost it? Why?
  • Which of the ideas discussed in this message do you feel you need to understand better? What would you say is the most encouraging thought you were impressed by from the message?
  • In point #2, how have your responses helped or hurt your ability to see things from God’s perspective?
  • Which of the scriptures from this message seem to impact you personally this week? (Consider memorizing it this week in order to reflect more deeply on its truth.) How would you communicate the truth of the passage in your own words to someone else?
  • How do you think God wants you to think or act differently because of this message or series? Is there an experience of disappointment or confusion with God that you’re struggling with that your group could pray for you about?
  • Parents, today we wrapped up our series on endurance. Ask your child(ren) what part of the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10 – 17 they learned about today. Kids learned that when things are tough, they should remember that God is stronger than anything in this world. When we have a relationship with God, we are on his team. And his team wins! Our bottom line was: Stand strong because God’s team wins in the end.
