Choosing the Best

Ephesians 5:15-17 (ESV) Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

A paradigm shift in our thinking?

Surprising freedom and a sobering sense of responsibility!

God’s involvement in our decision-making

He gives us the resources for making wise choices.

He’s working to empower us for doing what’s right.

Philippians 2:13 (NLT) God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him.

He sovereignly sets the stage & opens doors of opportunity for us.

1 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV) What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

He answers our requests for wisdom.

James 1:5 (NIV) If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

He uses the very circumstances involved to develop us.

He works through our choices to bring about his own purposes!

Proverbs 16:9, 33 (HCSB) A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD determines his steps…The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

Ephesians 1:11 (NIV) …According to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.

Faith focus points to craft a quality life

1. Living as disciples of Jesus.

John 6:27 (TEV) “Do not work for the food that spoils; instead work for the food that lasts for eternal life. This is the food which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has put his mark of approval on him.”

Following instruction from my master.

Matthew 11:28 (Phi) “Come to me, all of you who are weary and over-burdened, and I will give you rest! Put on my yoke and learn from me. For I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls…”

2. Growing as children of the Father.

Ephesians 5:1 (NIV) Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.

Reflecting the ways of my Creator.

3. Developing as Kingdom citizens.

Revelation 1:5-6 (NIV) To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father.

Giving allegiance to my true King!

Matthew 6:33 (NIV) “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness…”

Kingdom people take their God seriously!

Kingdom people take their lives seriously!

1 John 2:17 (TEV) The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever.

  • What is the biggest dilemma you’ve been faced with in a decision you had to make? When have you had to choose between good, better & best?
  • Look again at the ways Steve highlighted that God is involved in our decision-making. Are any of these especially helpful or meaningful to you in working with him on a decision you need to make? Are there any you feel you’d like to better understand?
  • Read Philippians2:13 (preferably in several translations). How does God actually work to empower us to do what’s right as this verse says? What’s been your experience of this truth as you consider your journey into doing the will of God?
  • Of the three “faith focus points” mentioned, which do you find you identify with easiest, or find yourself thinking about in how you walk daily with God
  • Is there a new idea or overall impression from this series on Knowing the Will of God that you’ll seek to remember and practice in your walk with God?
  • Go over the points about how God is involved in the choices we have to make in our daily lives. Help your children to understand, appropriately for their age, how each of these is to be appreciated. Help them understand that God is pleased when we choose to live for his will. Memorize the following passage together this week: Ephesians 5:17 (ESV) Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
