Living Big for God

Acts 17:6 (NRSV) “These people who have been turning the world upside down have come here also.”

Hebrews 13:7 (TEV) Remember your former leaders, who spoke God’s message to you. Think back on how they lived and died, and imitate their faith.

D.L. Moody – case study of a world changer

  1. Feb. 5, 1837 Northfield, MA; D. December 22, 1899 Northfield, MA

1. Don’t ever “get over” being saved!

Ephesians 2:4-5 (TLB) God is so rich in mercy; he loved us so much that even though we were spiritually dead and doomed by our sins, he gave us back our lives again when he raised Christ from the dead—only by his undeserved favor have we ever been saved.

1 Timothy 1:14 (TEV) “Our Lord poured out his abundant grace on me and gave me the faith and love which are ours in union with Christ Jesus.”

2. Seek to live in complete surrender to God.

Romans 6:13 (TLB) Give yourselves completely to God—every part of you—for you…want to be tools in the hands of God, to be used for his good purposes.

3. Hold contagious confidence in the gospel.

Romans 1:15-16 (HCSB) “I am eager to preach the good news…for I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes.”

Colossians 1:6 (NLT) This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and under-stood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.

The “3 R’s” of Moody’s preaching:

We’re Ruined by the fall

We’re Redeemed by the blood

We’re Regenerated by the Spirit

4. Develop a “world Christian heart.”

Revelation 5:9-10 (NLT) And they sang a new song with these words: “…You were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth.”

5. Consider how you can make a lasting impact.

What’s my best excuse against God using me?

2 Chronicles 16:9 (TLB) The eyes of the Lord search back and forth across the whole earth, looking for people whose hearts are perfect toward him, so that he can show his great power in helping them.

Study & Discussion Questions
  • Name some contemporary people whom you consider to be “world changers.”
  • When you consider D.L. Moody’s story, what things seem to stand out to you that are especially noteworthy?
  • Why do you think Moody began ministering to children in the slums in Sunday Schools? How would serving as a battlefield chaplain during the brutal Civil War years shape your way of carrying out ministry if it had been you?
  • When have you been surprised to see someone used by God in a powerful way? What do you think made that possible? How does 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 relate to this? See also Isaiah 66:1-2.
  • Read 2 Chronicles 16:9. Make a list of at least 5 qualities you think form a “critical mass” of characteristics of a life useful to God for his purposes. Which of these do you sense God prompting you to focus on as a result of this message?
  • If you were a “world changer,” what would matter most to you that you’d like to see changed? How could our Church help make that become a reality?
  • Parents of Elementary kids, today we learned about an unlikely hero and an even more unlikely battle plan. God gave Gideon some very unusual instructions for defeating their enemy. Ask kids how the Israelites won the battle. Would it take a little courage or a whole lot of courage to follow those instructions? Do you think your trust in God would have increased if you had won a battle in this way?
