Words from the Mouth of God

Matthew 4:4 (NIV) “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Two Englishmen we owe a big debt to!

  • John Wycliffe 1330 – 1384
  • William Tyndale 1494 – 1536

To live by God’s Word:

Involves regular, planned consumption of it.

Jeremiah 15:16 (NLT) “When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies.”

Job 23:12 (HCSB) “I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily food.”

Demands humbly responding to it.

James 1:21-22 (NLT) Humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NIV) “When you received the word of God… you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.”

2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

Requires serious study & focus on it.

Psalm 1:2-3 (HCSB) His delight is in the LORD’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Psalm 138:2 (NLT “I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.”

>Precepts >Principles >Promises >Person!

Produces people of courage & strength from it!

Isaiah 50:4-7 (NAS) “He awakens me morning by morning, he awakens my ear to listen as a disciple. The Lord GOD has opened my ear; And I was not disobedient nor did I turn back. I gave my back to those who strike me, and my cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover my face from humiliation and spitting. For the Lord GOD helps me, therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have set my face like flint, and I know that I will not be ashamed.”

Four sources of personal authority:

– Rational reasonings.

– Emotional experiences.

– Cultural norms.

– Biblical teachings.

John 8:31-32 (NRSV) “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

You’ve gotta’ stand up to be a stand out!
