Urban Legends Week 3

Lesson 3: IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU DO

What we want students to learn: That not all sin is the same.  All unforgiven sin leads to death.  But, there are truly different consequences for different sin.  And… God wants us to turn from our sin and take the way out that He offers us.

What we want students to do with what they’ve learned: Recognize unconfessed sin and patterns of sin in their lives and to realize the importance of turning away from it and towards God’s freedom and forgiveness.

Main Scripture: 1 John 1:8-9

Overview: What you do does matter. It matters because we are witnesses for Jesus and it helps us to grow in our personal relationship with Him. When we are able to recognize sin and turn from it, we turn toward Jesus and his purpose for our lives.

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU DO

2 Timothy 4:3

For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.

CULTURAL MISBELIEFS ABOUT SIN

  • I’M NOT A BAD PERSON

1 John 1:8

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Romans 3:10

…There is no one righteous, not even one.

  • ALL SIN IS THE SAME.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • SINCE I’VE ALREADY DONE IT, I MIGHT AS WELL KEEP DOING IT.

Romans 6:1-2

…Should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?

THE GOOD NEWS

1 John 1:8-9

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

IF YOU CONFESS YOUR SINS, HE’LL FORGIVE YOU

1 Corinthians 10:13

…And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

A SURRENDERED LIFE PROVIDES A WAY OUT OF ALL TEMPTATION

TALK IT OVER

  • Think about what pet peeves you have that might lead to sinful actions?

  • Is there a sin are you allowing to continue in your life?

  • What do you need to do differently to overcome the sin in your life?
