JHM Update 1.31

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2

Leader Tip: 8 Habits of Effective Small Group Leaders:

Number three is: Invite new people to visit the group weekly. I’m sure you know that healthy things grow and small group isn’t an exception. Reaching out to non-believers is a part of the wherehouse purpose statement and we know that it’s a command from Jesus to go and make disciples of all nations! So, as leaders, it’s our job to encourage the students in our groups to invite their friends and for the group to be a place that is warm and expectant of new students.

Upcoming Events:

January 29 (9:30 & 11:15am) – SHAPE & serve tours

January 29 – An Evening to Treasure volunteer orientation (3-5pm)

February 5 – wherehouse on the patio, in services, and serving

February 10 – An Evening to Treasure

Attendance:

Thanks for your patience as we work out the issues in attendance and adding new students. So that we don’t miss anyone and so that we get the necessary info, we are asking that you have all students in your group fill out a connection card. We would still love for you to take attendance through the email you receive, but we currently have a lot of missing information so we need to clean that up before we can move forward. Thank you!

Leader Meeting:

Please make it a priority to be at the wherehouse by 6:30pm to go over the details of the evening and to pray together. Send a message through GroupMe or text AJ at 906-7157 if you’ll be late or won’t be there.

Jesus And Stuff

Lesson 3: Less Is More

What we want students to learn: That no matter how much stuff we have, or want, it doesn’t add any real meaning to our life.

What we want students to do with what they’ve learned: To accept the challenge to see what stuff they can do without and consider donating it to someone who is needy.

Scripture Focus: Luke 12:13-21

Overview: This is an interesting lesson, and maybe a bold one. You’re going to build off a key phrase in Jesus’ words from Luke 12: “a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” You’re going to help your students understand exactly what this phrase means, but then you’re going to take it a step further. You’re going to challenge your students to consider parting with some of their stuff as a reflection of their internalization of this truth. You’ll have the chance, if you choose, to encourage students to work with their parent(s) to donate some of their stuff to charity, maybe even one your church sponsors. In this way, you’ll be providing them with a practical way to live out Jesus’ teachings on our stuff.

Outline

The following is what will be on the outline that students will be given for service.  The part labeled “Front” is what will be taught during the message/teaching time.  The part labeled “Back” is for your group to work through in order to dig deeper into the highlighted scripture.

(Front)

Luke 12:13-21

Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.”

Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?” Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods. And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

Malachi 3:10

10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!

Scripture of Focus:

  • What is one thing that stood out to you in this passage?

  • Why do you think it stood out to you?

  • What can you apply to your life from this passage?

Discussion Questions

Use the following questions to further your discussion as a group.  You can either do these after your Scripture of Focus time or you can use them within your scripture focus time to add to the conversation as a whole.  As always you are welcome to guide the discussion the best that you and your co-leader think fits your group.

What of your time, talents or treasure do you need to/want to sacrifice?

How could making a sacrifice benefit you personally?
Let’s come up with a plan to make a sacrifice by donating some time or some stuff.  Either as a group or individually.
