JHM Update, 4/4

But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer. Luke 5:16

7 Essentials for Family Ministry

The 4th environment to create is to let the Holy Spirit teach. Letting the Holy Spirit teach starts with me allowing the Holy Spirit to teach me so that I can lead others to allow Him to do the same for them. Asking students the question, how is God leading you to respond to this message and then being okay with silence is one way to help cultivate hungry hearts for Jesus. God doesn’t just want to give us knowledge. God is creative and personal and only He truly knows what’s happening in the lives of our students. If we do all the work for our students, we don’t allow God to do what he wants to do personally and individually in each of their lives. One of the best gifts we can give students is undistracted space to interact with Jesus because we don’t want students to be solely dependent on our relationship with Him.

Thank you!

Leader Meeting:

Please make it a priority to be at the wherehouse by 6:30pm to go over the details of the evening and to pray together. Send a message through GroupMe or text AJ at 906-7157 if you’ll be late or won’t be there.

TUESDAY, 4/4

Hey guys,

The Student Ministries staff will be at Saddleback Church on Monday & Tuesday for a Youth Pastor conference. Josh will be speaking at JHM service. Please be praying for him and for us as we learn some new things to help make our ministry better. Thanks for being faithful and committed to JHM! We appreciate you!

Jesus And Your Image

Lesson 4: Fearless

What we want students to learn: That it’s a mistake to let their concern for their image, and what people think about them, get in the way of their devotion to Jesus.

What we want students to do with what they’ve learned: To recommit to living a bold faith for God regardless of how they may look to the world around them.

Scripture Focus: Luke 7:36-50

Overview: Your students love God and want to follow Jesus. Let’s at least give them the benefit of the doubt. And yet for so many of them, culture’s call to look calm, cool, and collected keeps them from being as passionate about their faith as they might be. This final lesson will help your students see what it looks like for someone to put serving God above what others think about her. In this lesson, your students will be challenged to forget about what people may think about them, and to pursue Christ above all else.

Outline

The following is what will be on the outline that students will be given for service.  The part labeled “Front” is what will be taught during the message/teaching time.  The part labeled “Back” is for your group to work through in order to dig deeper into the highlighted scripture.

Luke 7:36-50

WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK DOESN’T DEFINE YOU

Matthew 5:11-12

11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

YOUR SINS DON’T DEFINE YOU

1 John 2:12

12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven because of Jesus’ name.
Psalm 130:3-4

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,     Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness

CHALLENGE: Pursue Christ in spite of what anyone may say about you

 (Back)

Matthew 5:11-12

11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

Scripture of Focus:

  • What is one thing that stood out to you in this passage?

  • Why do you think it stood out to you?

  • What can you apply to your life from this passage?

Discussion Questions

Use the following questions to further your discussion as a group.  You can either do these after your Scripture of Focus time or you can use them within your scripture focus time to add to the conversation as a whole.  As always you are welcome to guide the discussion the best that you and your co-leader think fits your group.

Are you more concerned with what other people think than what God thinks about you?  Why?

When you think about your past, is there something that you’ve done that you are letting define you?

What is holding you back from pursuing Christ regardless of what people say? What can you do this week to know that Christ defines who you are?
