We sent this email out last week to one of our teams and had several people say that it was helpful to them, so we thought we’d post it here! It’s short and sweet, but our hope is that it’s helpful for you too.
Sometimes I have people tell me that they love how I “get into the songs” at our services and my response to that (semi-awkward?) statement is always “it’s easy to do once the songs get into you”. That idea got me thinking this week, and I realized that there’s a lot of truth there… Check out what the book of psalms says about music-
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. Psalm 40:3
My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises with all my heart! Psalm 108:1
In other translations, Psalm 108:1 says “I will sing and make melody with all my being!” – don’t you love that? Don’t you love that God has given us a song to sing with all that we are? So let’s sing his songs with all that we are! Let’s make it our goal each week to focus less on how to “get into the songs” and focus more on how to “get the songs into us”. The difference in word play might be subtle, but I think that the difference in truth is huge! I find that once a song makes its way into my heart, it’s not long before it makes its way into my mind. In other words, it’s always easy to lead the songs we love!
One more thing to remember this week as you prepare for these services- our goal is never to merely entertain people with our music (let’s hope for far more than that!) but part of our goal is that the people at our services would know how much the Lord means to us by the way we worship him in song. Have an awesome week as you walk with God and sing to him with all your heart!
